Days of September

I can feel it coming upon us.  The month of September brings with it the morning dew glistening upon the leaves of trees just starting their descent into winter hibernation.  Well…maybe not yet, since we are still hinging on the 90 degree mark for most of the past few weeks.  But…it’s on its way!

I don’t know about you, but fall is one of my favorite times of year.  I love the lingering summertime temperatures hanging on to the remnants of the “daylight savings” days.  For those of us who don’t get home until after six o’clock at night, there is still enough time, and light, to take a quick jaunt to capture the colors of a sunset, or the golden wash upon the hillsides.  And all those golden hues get my mind running for the hills…ones covered with the golds, reds and oranges of a full blast of fall colors.  We may not get too many of those at our elevation, at least not yet; but head on up into higher elevations and you will be blessed with the brilliance of God’s paint brush as it washes away the summer heat and the trees begin to pack it in for the cold winter ahead.

It’s been a few years since I did a fall color run…I’m thinking it is time to do another one.  Perhaps some of you have the same idea?  If so, share your ideas with the rest of the club.  Perhaps we could even make a field trip out of it.

May your days of September be full of the last days of summer as you take the opportunity to photograph the beauty in the Bay Area; or venture higher to capture some of that gold in the hills.

The New DVCC Newsletter

Since it has been over a year since the last posting to the DVCC newsletter, why not start out fresh, right? So, to start it off, I hope you like the new look. Eventually, I will be utilizing different photographs from our members instead of the generic picture of the mountain scene that comes with the new theme I am using. I look forward to any comments you may have. Please let me know what you would like to see in future newsletters. I may be doing the background work, but it is a newsletter for all DVCC members and hopefully, future members.

So, let’s start on the new adventure and find out where it leads us. I look forward to providing you with current news and updates regarding anything that has to do with our club as well as whatever else may tweak our interests regarding the world of photography.

DVCC & N4C May Competition Results

Yes…the newsletter is back!  All I can ask of my fellow DVCC members is HAVE PATIENCE!  I am new at this and one thing is for sure…I can only improve, right?!  So, I hope you enjoy what I have to highlight for the month of April and please, be sure and shoot any items my way that you want to have me include in future newsletters.  If you see something I missed, please let me know.   I know I did not have all the information as far as who the judge was for our April 23rd competition and the number of prints submitted for judging; but I will be sure and get that information for May’s!   Looking forward to sharing the “DVCC News” with you.

What Are Your Photo Plans for the New Year? Some thoughts so far…

Mark and Cathy Pemberton:We have big plans for 2014. We plan to visit Japan and Brazil and hopefully Yellowstone and maybe Bosque del Apache. We had pretty good success last year with our conservation themed blog “One World” and hope to expand our reach with it (http://pembertonphoto.wordpress.com). We use the blog to explore conservation issues as well as photographic subjects. We invite everyone in DVCC to check it out and follow us. We will also attempt to mount a private, conservation themed, gallery show of our work in 2014. And finally we plan to resume our work in portrait photography and develop our skills in people travel photography.

Now, we’d love to hear what the rest of you DVCC’ers are planning. Can we help each other? Send us an email with any questions or comments.

Kathryn Stelljes: My family is off to Kauai so I’ll be shooting rainforests and beaches. I’ll also be visiting colleges with my daughter so I hope to get some good architecture and people photos. I’ve started a coaching business for artists and scientists and when my website is complete (http://www.freshviewcoaching.com), I’ll be featuring photos and other art, especially of patterns…if you’ve got something you want to share, let me know!

Let Us Know your plans and activities…some of us know each other well, but many of us don’t!

General and Competition Meeting Schedules are updated on the website for 2014. Let me know if you see any errors or have additions/changes. Standings are also up-to-date.

DVCC & N4C September Competition Results (revised)

DVCC September Outing: Mission Accomplished

Joe and Mary Crosby, Mike and Laurie Espinoza, Bob and Cathy McNutt along with Chris Nelson met at Mission San Juan Bautista for our September outing. The day was lovely with spotted clouds. After exploring the mission and surrounding museums we met for a nice lunch in the outdoor seating at Jardens De San Juan restaurant. We elected to forgo the Soledad mission and concentrated the rest of the afternoon on the Carmel mission. We explored the mission and museums and watched three different weddings, with three different photographers during the afternoon. All in all an interesting day rich with photographic opportunities.

The biggest challenge for photography was shooting in relatively dark chapels while remaining discrete and respectful.  Using tripods in the chapels or museums was inconvenient or not an option so ISO had to be pushed up to achieve usable results,  the aperture had to be opened way up, or one had to hold very still when shooting or brace one’s self on something when shooting at slow shutter speeds–or all of the above.

–Chris Nelson

Here are a couple shots to give you the flavor of the day.

DVCC September Competition

We had 86 images submitted into competition last month. Judge Joe Hearst told us his philosophy: for beginners he looks at technique but for more advanced photographers, he wants to see something new and unusual. Then he gave detailed, helpful feedback on each image.
